MisOcc bids to host Palarong Pambansa 2026
The provincial government of Misamis Occidental has expressed interest in hosting the conduct of Palarong Pambansa (National Games) in 2026.
The Department of Education’s Palarong Pambansa secretariat
has sent a technical inspection team for an ocular visit, from Nov. 14 to 17,
in the province’s sports facilities—in lieu of early preparation for the 2026
national games.
The team has checked the capabilities of Misamis Occidental
to hold a national event that would house a huge number of delegates from 18
regions nationwide, as they surveyed different schools in the province.
Vice Governor Rowena “Wheng” Gutierrez, representing Governor
Henry S. Oaminal welcomed and met the DepEd inspection team at the DepEd MisOcc, Division Office.
Gutierrez echoed the provincial government’s target to push
for "holistic development and inclusive growth that cuts across all,
especially the sector of the future leader's youth."
“Grounded on our firm belief that Misamis Occidental has so
much potential coupled with our current development momentum—that can be seen
in our fast-changing economic, tourism, and infrastructure landscape – we
humbly believe that if you allow us to host the Palarong Pambansa 2026 – we
will make it a historic benchmark for games from hereon as we aim to show the
country that Palarong Pambansa in Misamis Occidental will be one of the best
and most conducive,” she told the DepEd’s inspection team.
Gutierrez underscored the province’s rich history of
supporting sports at all levels, with the latest being during the Mindanao Leg
of Batang-Pinoy National Games in 2018.
“We fully understand that hosting an event of this magnitude
requires meeting standards – and we are ready for that. Hosting the 2026
Palarong Pambansa will be our second after 64 years – and we promise that it
will be most impressive,” the vice governor said.
In response, School Sports Division Palarong Pambansa
Secretariat Marivic Tolitol expressed appreciation to Governor Oaminal for
inviting the Palarong Pambansa Secretariat as well as the Philippine Sports
Commission to visit Misamis Occidental and do the inspection.
“I saw the passion, and commitment of your leaders. Sana
ganong klaseng passion at puso yung makita namin when you do the presentation
so that we can move our Palaro Board Members to judge in your favor and we are
looking forward to a productive inspection until Friday,” Tolitol said.
In relation to this, the provincial government said they are
now preparing the rehabilitation and facility enhancements as stated in the PSC
guidelines for handling a national event.
Currently, the province has cited 37 venues that are
prepared to host various sports disciplines. It said all playing venues can be
traveled in less than one hour away from the designated billeting quarters of
the participants.
The province can handle delegates, including
student-athletes and teacher-coaches, in 17 billeting venues located within 17
identified schools in the area.
The province has also crafted an emergency management plan
to ensure the security and safety of all participants during the events.
Also, they are now readying the commemorative items and
special incentives in recognition of participants’ involvement in the national
games.
The province said free shuttle services will be provided to
the delegations and they will have chances to explore the tourist destinations
in Misamis Occidental at the sidelines of the national games.
Gov. Oaminal said they are targeting to complete the
construction of a multi-billion Ozamiz Convention Center mega project ahead of
the Palarong Pambansa 2026.
The province said the convention center, which can
accommodate up to 20,000 individuals, will complement the current Bayfront
Arena, the Misamis Occidental Provincial Athletic Complex (MOPAC), and the
Asenso Misamis Occidental Cultural and Sports Center, which are all constructed
in Oroquieta City.(SM/PGMO)
