Misamis Occidental @94: Celebrating culture and heritage with Perangat Festival 2023

Come and experience the astonishing celebration of the history of our rich culture and the dazzling heritage of our people here in Misamis Occidental.

The 94th founding anniversary of the Province of Misamis Occidental will be commemorated month of November coinciding with this year’s second Perangat Festival in Oroquieta City.

Perangat is a Subanen term which means ‘Pag-asenso’ in Tagalog term or progression.

The ‘Perangat’ Festival (Feast of Progression) is the province’s annual celebration of the Subanen Tribe’s rich way of life, cultural beliefs, and traditions. The festivity also serves as the tribe’s thanksgiving for God’s abundant blessings in their communities.

The “feast of progression” aims to push further a sense of cultural awareness to the people of Misamas Occidental, in response to the pivotal need for stronger appreciation and respect for the multi-cultural values of every Misamisnon.

This year’s festival is also anchored with the province’s vision of making Misamis Occidental one of the leading tourist destinations in Mindanao—with an aim of advocating its top tourist spots, increasing the number of tourists and excursionist, creating additional cultural entertainment opportunities for the locals as well as enhancing the quality of life of every Misamisnon.

All these targets are parallel to the current administration’s development thrust— the “ASENSO MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL”—which was inspired by the 5-M mantra of the provincial government, Misamisnon Magpuyong Malinawon, Malambuon ug Malipayon (Live Peacefully, Prosperously and Happily).

Governor Henry S. Oaminal invites tourists and excursionists from all over the country to celebrate with Misamisnons in the 94th founding anniversary of Misamis Occidental concerted with the Perangat Festival 2023.

The provincial government prepared the province’s towns’ best of the best cultural depictions and heritage presentations.

The governor stressed that festivals serve as “potent anchors for attaining significant tourism development” in certain areas.

Marking the start of this year's festive celebration is the ceremonial ‘Pagsaulog sa MisOcc’ Provincial Anniversary in Asenso Misamis Occidental Sports and Cultural Center for the founding anniversary of Misamis Occidental.

The Perangat Festival will kick off on Nov. 11 in Misamis Occidental Provincial Athletic Complex (MOPAC) Grounds in Oroquieta City.

Gov. Oaminal will also lead the Kasalan sa Kapitolyo on Nov. 8 and the early launching of the Pamaskong Handog distribution in various areas in the province.

In lieu of this year’s feast of harvest, the Misamis Occidental province is expecting higher rice yields by the end of this year, after implementing various agricultural programs for the farmer-beneficiaries such as free fertilizers and land preparation for farmers' inputs assistance.

Gov. Oaminal said the province is eyeing a harvest input of up to six metric tons (MT) per hectare.

"While the national average production is only 4.9 MT per hectare, and Northern Mindanao's current production yield in our rice industry is 5.2 MT per hectare, we are trying to target 5.6 to 6 MT per hectare to achieve our desired rice sufficiency," Oaminal underscored, during the recent peace and order council meeting.

The provincial government’s Asenso Rice Farmers Full Assistance aims to push sustainable self-food sufficiency levels by assisting farmers to grow their products and directly sell to the markets.

“This initiative allows farmers to also use free farm equipment and machinery which can lower the production cost,” the governor said.

Oaminal considered local farmers as "heroes bringing food to every household's tables.''(SN/PGMO)

The ‘Perangat’ Festival, a feast in the progression of the province's agricultural sector, has been realized. ‘Perangat’ is a Subanen term which means ‘Pag-asenso’ in Tagalog term or progression. The celebration of the province’s agricultural progress began in 2022. (PGMO)
